The Deputy Chief Minister is a member of the state government. While not a constitutional office, it seldom carries any specific powers. A Deputy Chief Minister usually also holds a cabinet portfolio such as the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Ministry of Finance.
The position of Deputy Chief Minister is used to bring political stability and strength to a coalition government.

- In the parliamentary system of government, the Chief Minister is treated as the “first among equals” in the cabinet.
- Currently, 10 out of the 28 states and 1 out of the 8 union territories have Deputy Chief Ministers.
- Out of these 10 States and 1 Union Territory, Andhra Pradesh has five Deputy Chief Ministers, while Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have two Deputy Chief Ministers each. No other states and union territories have more than one Deputy Chief Minister in office.
- 5 Deputy Chief Ministers belong to Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), 7 Deputy Chief Ministers belong to Bharatiya Janata Party, and One Deputy Chief Minister each from Aam Aadmi Party, Jannayak Janta Party, Nationalist Congress Party, National People’s Party, and Mizo National Front.
- The longest-serving Deputy Chief Minister of India was Sushil Kumar Modi who served as Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
- The first Deputy Chief Minister after the Chief Minister Post was O. Panneerselvam, Who served as deputy chief minister of Tamilnadu from All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
