The Prime Minister of Japan is the head of the Executive Branch and the Chief Minister of the Government of Japan. The Prime Minister of Japan also chairs the Cabinet of Japan and can select and dismiss its Ministers of State.

The Prime Minister serves as the civilian commander-in-chief of the Japan Self Defence Forces and as a sitting member of the House of Representatives.

The individual for Prime Minister’s Post is appointed by the Emperor of Japan after being nominated by the National Diet and must retain the nomination of the lower house and answer to parliament to remain in office.

  • The office of Daijō-daijin (太政大臣, Chancellor of the Realm of Japan) was the equivalent of the office of Prime Minister.
  • Daijō-daijin was an ancient role that was discontinued in the 18th century and briefly revived during the Meiji era.
  • The office of Daijō-daijin was abolished in December 1885 with the appointment of Itō Hirobumi in the new position of Prime Minister.
  • The first Japanese Prime Minister was Itō Hirobumi who took office on 22nd December 1885.
  • The present Prime Minister is Fumio Kishida who held the office from 4th October 2021.
  • Prime Ministers under the Meiji Constitution had a mandate from the Emperor.
  • Eisaku Satō was the longest uninterrupted serving Prime Minister, holding office from 1964 to 1972 until his record was surpassed by Shinzo Abe in August 2020. (2798 Days)
